Accident

On April 19, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance confirmed the takeover of the facilities of the Departmental Directorate of Integrated Health Services Networks (DDRISS) of Baja Verapaz by members of the Health Union, due to their disagreement with the change of director of the institution.

The measure began on April 18 in the followingnoon, when a MSPAS commission visited the departmental headquarters to notify the director’s replacement.

The new director is Jesús Fernando Matías González, who replaces Nery Ronaldo Cabrera García, dismissed for alleged acts of corruption, although the MSPAS did not provide specific details regarding the case.

According to a worker who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, the dismissal of the previous director was due to fraudulent actions during his administration.

“He was dismissed because he eliminated the contracts of 60 people in 2023, including an elderly woman,” he explained regarding one of the supposed reasons for his departure. According to what she said, in this case the worker was on vacation and when she returned she no longer had a contract.

According to the testimony, the dismissals were a request from the National Union of Health Workers of Guatemala (SNTSG), with the aim of hiring new associates.

The altercation began and intensified on Thursday, April 18, when the workers in charge of notifying the director’s departure were detained by the opposition group.

The alert reached the authorities and they requested intervention by agents of the National Civil Police (PNC), who appeared and acted as mediators between employees and union members. Finally the staff were released.

During the takeover, union members launched rockets and even burned some bombs in front of the street, while the authorities sought dialogue between the parties.
