The consequences of climate change are now being felt by everyone. Fighting it is difficult, but not impossible. In addition to the big levers that politics and industry have to press, it also depends on each and every individual. But why is some behavior change so difficult? “Why don’t we just do it?” is the title of a book by the psychologist Isabella Uhl-Hädicke, who teaches at the University of Salzburg. The scientist was also part of the scientific advisory board of the recently ended climate council.
We all know the paradoxes in climate issues: We stow our purchases in a cloth bag with a clear conscience, only to chug home in a traffic jam in our petrol car, annoyed. We get angry regarding other climate sinners, but protest when we are told to only take a short shower. In the hot summers, we fuel the crisis even further with air conditioning.
What can individuals contribute meaningfully to the fight once morest climate change, where is the healthy middle ground between a shrug of the shoulders and panic?
