27 years following the scene of the liberation of Sabine and Laetitia, locked up in the cellars of this dismal house of Marcinelle which also saw Julie and Mélissa die, the district of avenue de Philippeville and rue des Damzelles is almost getting a makeover.
At the corner of the two streets, the place where Marc Dutroux’s house stood has been transformed: white facades, a low wall raised above the level of the sidewalk, a garden that is beginning to take on natural colors and a fresco. The same as the one that adorned the tarp, hiding the ruin that was there for years, until its demolition in June 2022.
Passing by, or on the Pont de Philippeville, take a look if it hasn’t been done yet. The memorial garden imagined by the parents of the victims of Dutroux, called “Between earth and sky”, seems finished – or almost.
“That’s the case, the construction site is coming to an end”, confirms the City of Charleroi, which had bought Dutroux’s house for €23,000 at the time, a sum entirely reimbursing the legal costs of the victim families. An “official moment” for the inauguration will also be planned, with the families of course: contact has been made in this regard.
As the parents wished, access to the cellars – which have been preserved – has been provided. It was a declared will, in case the justice had to decide to reopen the file to shed light on “some gray areas”.
The parents of Julie and Mélissa on the future memorial of Marcinelle: “Thank you very much for having included us in the reflection”
