Beta version of Skype gains support for Apple Silicon

Although the first Macs with Apple Silicon being released in 2020, many apps still don’t have native support for Apple-created processors. One of them is — or was — the famous video calling app Skypewhose developer, Microsoftrecently announced that it will gain compatibility with machines equipped with the M1 and M2 chips (and their variants).

As noted by Petri, the Insider version of Skype (as Microsoft calls its beta versions) has already gained support for Apple Silicon, while the general public will receive this capability soon. By developing a version that is compatible with such chips, without the need to emulate, the app takes advantage of the maximum possible performance available.

And we can already notice the difference in the version that has compatibility with the newest processors. While the current app takes 200 milliseconds to load conversations when opening, the new version (on Macs with Apple Silicon, obviously) needs just 70ms to complete the same task.

The update will also include bug fixes. One involving problems opening and reading documents will be resolved, as will another blocking Skype notifications in Microsoft Edge.

It is not yet known exactly when the update will be released to all users, but it is possible to imagine that the version is in the final stages of testing. Soon everyone will be able to enjoy faster, more efficient Skype thanks to Apple Silicon.

Imagine how many apps still need to launch new versions with compatibility with new processors, huh?! ????
