The most decisive: stop smoking and start exercising
Participants who completed all of these advice continuously and having therefore adopted a much healthier lifestyle obtained the best scores for reduction in mortality (- 58%) and recurrence (- 37%). But that’s not all. The researchers point out that some recommendations seem to have more impact than others. Thus, the patients never smoked and having met or exceeded the instructions in terms ofphysical activity saw their risk of mortality reduced by almost 45% and that of recurrence reduced by 35% just by following these two Rules of Conduct. Conversely, lowering alcohol consumption and maintaining a normal BMI was not significantly associated with reduced mortality or recurrence, the team explaining this last point by the speciousness of body mass index (IMC).

However, the seven points of recommendation described in this study fall within part of a healthier general lifestyle that is relatively easy to implement. Really good news as the prevalence of this type of cancer continues to increase worldwide. As a reminder, in France, 60,000 breast cancers are diagnosed each year. So, according to statistics, every eighth woman will face this disease in her life and 15 to 20%(3) of them are at risk of a recurrence following ten years. Finally, on average, breast cancer causes 12,000 deaths per year in France.
