Best Underwear for Genital Health: Tips from Gynecologists and Urologists

In the morning, the choice of underwear is often quickly dispatched. However, as long as you care regarding your private parts, you have every interest in worrying regarding what is supposed to protect them. Unsurprisingly, the underwear you choose can have both positive and negative effects on the well-being of your genital areas.

Fabrics to choose, comfortable cuts, habits to adopt… Le HuffPost questioned gynecologists and urologists to know the four tips to follow to ensure that your underwear does not cause you any harm.

1. Choose the right material

The fabric must become an essential criterion when selecting underwear. According to the gynecologist doctor Andrea Braden, “generally speaking, the best fabrics for underwear are natural fabrics like cotton”. But this factor alone is not enough, since the material must offer a certain breathability. Braden adds that “air circulates better with cotton underwear than polyester”, which makes it a material of choice for vulvar health, which requires good air circulation. Likewise, for men, the doctor Scott D. Miller states that cotton stands out in that it is “comfortable, cool, breathable, and moisture-wicking”.

Conversely, fabrics that don’t let you breathe should be avoided. For example, synthetic materials like nylon and satin are not recommended. But Dr Miller particularly insists on polyester, which he advises to avoid because of its poor absorption and breathing capabilities. If you’re unsure regarding a certain mix of materials in underwear, Dr. Braden suggests feeling if the fabric is “soft and non-slippery”in which case you can go there safely.

2. Choose the cut that suits you

Only you can judge the comfort of an underwear, the main thing is to find one that “does not squeeze you or cause friction”. However, urologist Dr. Fenwa Milhouse recommends amplitude. As when it came to the choice of material, air circulation and moisture absorption are also the two keys. For men, this choice is all the more important as its impact on fertility is suggested by certain research. This study ofHarvard and 2018 demonstrated this, and recommends the boxer.

For women, the doctor Suzy Lipinski emphasizes the vigilance to be had towards thongs, which tend to be tighter and constrictive. She specifies: “That doesn’t mean you can never wear one, but it’s just best to minimize your use.” Don’t forget your medical history either. Indeed, for women prone to infections, Dr. Braden warns that thongs can increase the risk of bacterial vaginosis.

3. Change yourself every day

This is a rule agreed upon by all the doctors interviewed: it is necessary to change your underwear at least once a day to ensure that the bacterial load remains stable. Dr. Braden explains that there is nothing abnormal regarding bacteria being present in your underwear, but it is a matter of preventing their accumulation. Wearing the same underwear for a long time can cause infections because the moisture mixes with the bacteria on it. Otherwise, the smell is also a sure sign.

4. Why not sleep naked?

Don’t worry, you’re not necessarily going the wrong way if you’ve been sleeping in your underwear forever. If you have applied the advice above, then doctors do not see any particular problem. However, some of them believe that it might be beneficial to do without it, in order to allow your private parts to breathe and to reduce humidity and friction. It all depends on your personal preferences.
