With the snowfall of recent weeks already making many want to put on their ski boots, here are the most popular ski resorts – and those that still have work to do – according to a survey conducted among Quebecers.
“Alpine skiing and snowboarding aren’t cheap, especially when you factor in all the expenses for a day, such as dining and equipment rental. This is why it is worth comparing the offers,” said Marie-Eve Shaffer, journalist at “Protégez-Vous”, in a press release on Tuesday.
A survey conducted among 1,546 dedicated skiers, who have frequented various resorts over the past five years, revealed that it is not the highest peaks that shine among Quebecers, for whom the price of entry, the food offering and changing space would play an important role, according to the review.
In first place, it was the Le Relais Ski Center, located in the Capitale-Nationale, which stood out with an appreciation rate of 8.6 out of 10 and 92% of skiers who would recommend it, closely followed by Owl’s Head, in Estrie, and Val Saint-Côme, in Lanaudière, with 8.4 and 8.3 respectively out of 10.
But unsurprisingly, the high entry costs in certain centers discouraged respondents for whom the value of the ticket would be “too high for the experience offered”, noted the survey.
This would particularly be the case for Massif de Charlevoix, Tremblant and Mont-Sainte-Anne, which would charge $149, $135 and $126 respectively for a one-day ski ticket.
“Ski resort operating costs have increased by approximately 20% from 2020 to 2022. So ticket prices have also increased,” noted Josée Cusson, director of communications and marketing for the Ski Resorts Association. ski du Québec (ASSQ), at “Protégez-vous”.
For others, it was rather the food offering of “poor quality” or particularly expensive value for money that weighed heavily in the balance, according to the study.
“The vast majority of resorts only get away with an acceptable rating when it comes to food service. Several respondents are sorry to see that the menus are not more nutritious,” said Marie-Ève Bergeron, project manager at “Protégez-Vous”.
At the bottom of the ranking, Mont-Sainte-Anne was only recommended by 32% of those who visited it in recent years, while many were particularly reluctant regarding the safety of the place, following a ski lift fell last winter.
