Munich (ots) – Congratulations from Constantin Film: SUN AND CONCRETE was awarded the Bavarian Film Prize in the evening! David Wnendt’s uncompromising adaptation of the novel received the coveted “Pierrot” in the categories “Best Screenplay” (David Wnendt, Felix Lobrecht) and “Best Picture Design” (Jieun Yi). After the BUNTE News Faces Award for leading actor Levy Rico Arcos, the CIVIS Cinema Award and the audience award for “Best Youth Film” at the German Children’s Media Festival “Goldener Spatz”. SUN AND CONCRETE so now, in addition to the great success at the box office, we have also been able to convince a specialist jury.
At the award ceremony in Munich’s Prinzregententheater, she praised the “powerful, direct and always absolutely authentic images that Jieun Yi found for the complex subject.” Accordingly, Jieun Yi “achieved the feat of never drifting into the socio-romantic cliché in her concise pictures, but rather remaining genuine and truthful throughout.”
The jury’s statement regarding David Wnendt’s and Felix Lobrecht’s script work says: “The scenes are atmospherically dense and clearly defined, the characters multifaceted and believable. The dialogues capture the sound of the street, sound like real Berlin-Neukölln from 2003 and not like paper .”
The Bavarian Film Prize has been awarded by the Bavarian State Government by an independent jury since 1979 and honors outstanding achievements in German filmmaking in order to emphasize the importance of cinema films as a cultural asset. The Bavarian Film Prize is one of the most valuable and coveted awards of its kind in Germany.
SUN AND CONCRETE is a Seven Elephants production in co-production with Constantin Film. The film was produced by Fabian Gasmia and David Wnendt with Christoph Müller as co-producer; Martin Moszkowicz is the executive producer. Directed by David Wnendt, who also wrote the screenplay together with Felix Lobrecht. The film was funded by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB), the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), Film Funding Agency (FFA), Central German Media Funding (MDM), Creative Europe Media Program of the European Union, the German Film Fund (DFFF) and the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF).
