This is unheard of. In twelve seasons, no candidate for Best Pastry Chef had abandoned the program. And yet, this Wednesday, November 1, Ninon raised her hand to speak when Marie Portolano was preparing to reveal the name of the competitor eliminated at the end of the eighth episode. In her speech, the youngest in the competition announced that she preferred to devote herself to her studies rather than to the M6 show. So, she leaves the adventure. Cyril Lignac and Mercotte, visibly shocked by this news, praised his “exceptional career”. Contacted by Télé-Loisirs, the young woman confides in this historic episode of Best Pastry Chef.
The Best Pastry Chef 2023: “I mightn’t continue like that”, testifies Ninon following his abandonment
Télé-Loisirs: How did you plan to combine your baccalaureate with the competition?
Ninon: Already, my specialty tests took place before filming. I still had the philosophy test and the grand oral exam. Production had told me that there would be work rooms so I might be quiet but that wasn’t possible, I was too tired because the days start at 6 a.m. and end at 10 p.m. I realized that I was no longer working at all and that I was only baking because we didn’t have time to do anything else. I mightn’t continue like this. When I got into medicine, that was the trigger. It was no longer possible.

Who did you notify before your abandonment?
No one was supposed to know but among the candidates, I was really very close to Emily, Fanny and Thibaut. I spoke to them regarding it because I wanted to get their opinion but production asked me not to tell anyone even though it had already been done! And then I had obviously spoken to production regarding it before so that they might brief me on what I had to do.
Did production know that you might potentially leave in the middle of the season?
I had always told them that studies came before the competition and I repeated it throughout the season. Afterwards, it was still expected that I would be able to revise and reconcile the two even though that was not the case. They did what they might but there were the constraints of filming. They learned like me, over the course of filming, that one and the other might not fit together.

When did you make your decision?
It’s been on my mind for a while. I had the dates of my grand oral and that of the philosophy test. We realized at that moment that things weren’t going well, my oral exam should have been postponed because it fell on too important a day of filming. On the day of the philosophy baccalaureate, I should have returned home the day before at midnight. It was a combination that made me tell myself that I had to leave the tent this week.
Was it a difficult choice to make?
It’s certain that I had a pang in my heart. I didn’t want to leave, I wanted to stay with the others. At Le Meilleur Pâtissier, it’s still comfortable: we bake all day, we have all the ingredients we want, we return to the hotel in the evening… It was quite idyllic. And there, I had to return for studies and philosophy! [Elle rit.] It was a complicated decision to make but I had always said that the baccalaureate came before baking.

How is your first year of medical school going?
It goes well. I study in Grenoble. There is a huge amount of work to do but I like it. It’s an extremely selective competition so I’m going to give it my all. If I continue, I would like to become an emergency doctor. In another sector, it might be in the dental field to be a maxillofacial surgeon, reconstruction surgery. But you already have to move on to the second year!
Do you still have time to bake?
It’s true that it’s complicated. On Instagram, a lot of people ask me for my recipes but I don’t have time to make a dessert! Sometimes I make cookies or simple things to get me out of medicine, but I definitely can’t make cakes as sophisticated as I used to.
