Orlando, the tourist capital of the USA: Surprises in Florida

Alligators, citrus fruits and idyllic locations: Orlando in the Sunshine State of Florida has much more to offer than roller coasters and Mickey Mouse. FOCUS Online author Anja Rüweling looked at the city.

When you think of Orlando, images of life-size Mickey mice, adventurous roller coasters and Cindarella’s fairytale castle usually spring to mind. Orlando stands for Disney World and theme parks. The image is no coincidence: around 50 amusement parks have been built in the Orlando area alone over the past four decades. With more than 50 million visitors annually, Orlando is one of the most visited destinations in the USA. For years, even more tourists traveled to Florida than to the metropolis New York. However, a holiday in Orlando does not necessarily have to lead to an amusement park. Quiet and idyllic places like Winter Park form a counterpoint to the colorful and flashy world of the cartoon heroes. Huge orange plantations show what sources of income there are in addition to tourism. And the natural landscape with its wild animals promises just as much adventure as roller coaster rides. What many people also don’t know about Orlando: It is the scene of an eventful and exciting history.

FOCUS Online was there and looked at the other Orlando.
