Best Merguez Sausages for Your Barbecue: The Ultimate Brand Test and Comparative Review

2023-07-22 15:15:00

New episode of our series of consumer tests. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the five supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl and Carrefour) by comparing the major brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of 20 points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and the quality-price ratio. This week, we went into barbecue mode with the spare ribs.

The great brand test: here are the best merguez sausages to put on your barbecue (COMPARATIVE)

Appearance of the packaging: difficult to put different dimensions when looking at the different packages available on the shelves. For 5 of the 6 references, it is vacuum packaging, with very discreet labels. No logo or specific drawing, the product is highlighted by the transparent packaging. Only Colruyt presents its product differently in its butcher’s section, in a simple tray.

Appearance of the product: there was a real lack of meat at Intermarché and Aldi, and it showed. For the rest, it was very correct, especially at Aldi and Colruyt, where the meat looked meatier and fresher.

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score D for everyone.

Label Readability: Overall, it wasn’t amazing at all. Only Colruyt deserves an above average rating. For the rest, you had to turn it all over the place to understand something, and the writings were too small, especially at Delhaize. Very disappointing.

Our consumer test of the week: chipolatas, it’s a disaster!

Taste: we start with Carrefour, where we liked the taste of the marinade, while looking for that of the meat. It was too light to deserve half the points. At Lidl, the remark was the same, and there was above all more fat than meat to taste… For Intermarché, the taste was much better, but it lacked meat and was a little too dry. For Aldi, we really liked the meat, but the marinade lacked flavor. At Delhaize, we appreciated the whole product, which was a cut above the previous ones. But the product that was far better than the others comes from Colruyt. The reputation of Colruyt butchers is confirmed once again, and without discussion.

Value for money: for a vacuum-packed piece, prices vary. Aldi and Carrefour offer a one kilo piece at €12.17 and €13.95. For the rest, we turn between 500 and 700 g. In order: Lidl (€5.73), Delhaize (€6.80), Intermarché (€7.96). The Colruyt tray was sold for €7.84.
