Best Hikes in Belgium: 3 Scenic Trails to Explore

2023-11-18 15:04:00

We asked readers Deutio, the weekend supplement of L’Avenir, DH and La Libre to advise us on hikes. Here is a selection of 3 proposals:

1/“Five fountains and ponds”

Lucien Ory invites us to discover “one of the prettiest hikes in the Liège Condroz, starting from the church of Pailhe (commune of Clavier) located Route de Givet 4560 Clavier-Pailhe. A loop hike with a distance of 10.5 km, an approximate duration of +/- 3 hours and marked with a small vertical red rectangle.

A course in vast countryside, in the woods and where you can discover the hamlet of Saint-Fontaine (Chateau, chapel, ponds and fording).

”To do in all seasons, but be careful during hunting season.”

2/Notre Dame du Vivier Abbey in Marche-Les-Dames

Muriel Renson offers a walk in the Namur region, starting from the Notre Dame du Vivier abbey in Marche-Les-Dames, “former listed Cictercian monastery, absolutely worth discovering! A splendid walk awaits you!”:

The abbey offers an ideal starting point for direct access to the Marche-Les-Dames National Forest.

During this hike, discover walking trails offering remarkable views of the Meuse valley. The walk forms a loop, it begins and ends near the Bethlehem Chapel located in the grounds of Notre Dame du Vivier Abbey. The chapel has been transformed into a restaurant, the ideal place to take a gourmet break following hiking and taste the abbey’s tasty beers and above all discover this place steeped in history.

Believe me, great discoveries await you!

Practical information: walk not recommended in rainy weather and be careful with children due to the height of the rocks

9.5 km loop hike, approximately lasting +/- 3 hours

3/Braine-le-Château > Ittre > Braine-le-Château

Jean Callewaert takes us to Walloon Brabant: I did the Braine-le-Château > Ittre > Braine-le-Château walk yesterday (last week).

Very beautiful walk (landscapes) of approximately 16.5 km with a departure not too far from Brussels.

The outward journey to Ittre is approximately 10 km and the return 6.5 km. This allows you to leave around 9:30 – 10:00 from Braine-le-Château (where there is parking), have lunch in a restaurant in Ittre and return before dark (in winter).

In Braine-le-Château: beautiful recumbent figure in the church. The walk passes in front of the ordinary mill.
