Diabetes is a serious medical condition that requires permanent changes in your lifestyle habits.
Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes cause blood sugar levels to rise too high. In type 1 patients, this occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys cells that produce insulin.
Whereas, in type 2 patients, this happens when the body is not able to produce enough insulin, or when the body’s cells do not react to insulin properly.
It is not yet known what causes type 1 diabetes, but type 2 diabetes is often linked to factors such as weight, diet and lack of exercise.
While what you eat and drink can increase your risk of developing diabetes, it can also reduce it.
An expert told the British newspaper Express regarding the best drink to prevent diabetes or lower blood sugar levels if you already have it.
Dr. Deborah Lee, of Dr. Fox’s online pharmacy, recommends drinking plenty of water.
“You don’t have to be creative to come up with the best drink for people with type 2 diabetes,” she said. “Water contains no carbohydrates – so it’s glucose-free.”
“High blood glucose levels mean that the kidneys have to work overtime to flush glucose out of the body in the urine – which means if your blood sugar levels are high, it makes you urinate more.
Excessive thirst is a sign of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). Those with high levels of glucose in the blood are more likely to become dehydrated, which increases the concentration of glucose in the bloodstream, so drinking more water is the best way to help. The kidneys help lower blood glucose and prevent dehydration,” she advises.
What does the research say?
And she continued: “One 2011 research study showed that those who drank more than one liter of water per day had a 28 per cent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared to those who drank 500ml or less.”
The study referred to was published in the Diabetes Care Journal.
As part of the research, 3,615 middle-aged men and women with healthy blood sugar levels were monitored for an average of nine years.
In that time, 565 participants developed high blood sugar levels, which the researchers compared to the amount of water they were drinking.
The study concluded: “Self-reported water intake was inversely and independently associated with the risk of hyperglycaemia.”
How do you get the benefits of water?
Dr. Lee advised me not to drink sweetened water.
“Plain tap water is the best option, but soda is also a good option as long as it’s not sweetened,” she said.
It is generally best to avoid drinks that contain artificial sweeteners.
You can make the water more interesting to drink by adding ice and chopping up pieces of fruit.
“The water in tea and coffee is part of your daily water intake, but be careful not to overdo it, and don’t add sugar or artificial sweeteners.”
It revealed that women need 1.6 liters of water per day (regarding eight cups), while men need two liters (regarding 10 cups).
