It’s the end of an era in Best Buy stores across the United States as the company will stop selling DVDs and Blu-rays in its locations starting in 2024.
The decision reflects a change, not only concrete in consumer habits, but which also occurred with disconcerting speed.
Indeed, DVD sales reached their record less than two decades ago, with sales in the United States of $16.3 billion (C$22 billion) in 2005. However, the figures quickly declined, for standing just above two billion dollars in 2018.
Blu-rays suffered a similar fate, although less drastic, with record sales in 2013 at $2.37 billion (C$3.20 billion), followed by a plummet to $1.8 billion ( CAN$2.43 billion) in 2018.
The most recent data indicates that combined sales of Blu-rays and DVDs stood at $1.5 billion (C$2 billion) in 2022, proof that consumers are increasingly abandoning these products.
“These products also took up space in stores,” argued the co-founder of Amplio Stratégies Philippe Richard Bertrand. “I think Best Buy just made a real real estate move. They’re going to put other types of devices, maybe electronics, that sell better to replace those long rows of DVDs.”
This size change only affects branches in the United States for the moment. However, it cannot be ruled out that a similar scenario is emerging in Canada, which might take place in the coming years.
Questioned by TVA Nouvelles, many Quebecers confirm that habits have changed.
