Bernie Ecclestone “F1 should thank Max Verstappen”[F1-Gate.com]

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says F1 should “thank Max Verstappen” instead of criticizing it.

Bernie Ecclestone, 92, is no longer racing following being kicked out of Liberty Media in 2017, but is back in the Interlagos paddock because he lives nearby with his Brazilian wife and children. It’s here.

“It’s great to see Formula 1 moving forward,” Ecclestone told De Telegraaf.

“A lot has changed, but a lot remains the same. I saw countless familiar faces.”

Verstappen, who has won his second straight F1 title in 2022, has been embroiled in controversy, including over budget caps and refusal to overtake team-mate Sergio Perez last Sunday.

“F1 should thank Max Verstappen,” argues Bernie Ecclestone.

“Max is a racer. He does what he has to do. He just races. Fans have wanted to see someone like that for a long time.”

Bernie Ecclestone credits Max Verstappen with reviving F1’s popularity in the Netherlands and leading to the revival of the Dutch Grand Prix.

“The Netherlands are very proud of him and everyone is behind him,” said Ecclestone.

“That’s the only reason we’re back at Zandvoort. We haven’t been there the last two times, but hopefully things have improved a bit, otherwise it wouldn’t be good,” said Bernie. Ecclestone smiled.

Bernie Ecclestone also believes Max Verstappen will continue to dominate.

“It depends on his car, but if Red Bull keeps it, I don’t see why he can’t keep winning,” said Ecclestone.

Asked if he would break Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton’s joint record of seven world championships, Ecclestone said: “I don’t know. I hope so.”
