Bernhard Langer does it once more and heads into the last day of the Chubb Classic as the leader. Langer has won the PGA Tour Champions tournament at Tiburón Golf Club in Florida three times and is on his way to another victory. It would be the 43rd victory on the Ü50 tour and that with a great performance.
Bernhard Langer plays his age once more
Bernhard Langer played the first day in Naples, Florida without any mistakes, but with an unbelievable eight birdies on the difficult Tiburón Course. After a cautious start with two birdies on the first nine holes, Langer really got going. From lanes 11 to 15 he managed an unparalleled birdie series. Langer holed five times to win and ended his round with a crowning birdie on the 18th hole. With his round result of 64 strokes, he played his age once more and thus developed a more than comfortable lead. “It’s just fun to play his age. It was really fun when I first did it on my birthday. It’s still special because it’s not easy to do.”
Strong performance once more on Day 2 of the PGA Tour Champions
After his outstanding round on the first day of the Chubb Classic, Langer followed up with a round of 68. Despite many birdies, the exceptional German player allowed himself a few mistakes, “It was a bit more ups and downs. Yesterday I had a very clean card, no bogeys. Today I had seven birdies, but also three bogeys.” Langer sees two main reasons for this: “The wind direction was different and the wind was also stronger. I found some really good holes, but I didn’t play quite as solidly as yesterday and didn’t make quite as many putts, and it all led to a 4 under.”
For Langer, the road to victory is strong putting. His goal is to keep the ball in play on the final Sunday and to hope for good putts.
His “fist pump” on the final track on Saturday was unusual for the 64-year-old. Langer birdied there once more, putting himself two shots ahead of Retrief Goosen, Scott Parel and Tim Petrovic.
“It’s nice to be two shots ahead, not just one,” Langer explained followingwards. “It’s nice to make a putt and end the day well and give people something to cheer regarding.” It’s also the spectators who make the Chubb Classic something special for Langer, “A lot of people of our age group live in this area. A lot of Germans spend the winter here. I hear a lot of German out here, it’s fun.” So Langer’s conclusion on the first two days of the tournament in Florida: “Yes, it’s a very nice atmosphere and it’s good to have all the people back.”
