The Young Boys are Swiss Cup winners for the eighth time. In an impressively intense final, the Bernese beat the defending champion Lugano 3-2 in their Wankdorf, also thanks to two goals from Jean-Pierre Nsame.

FC Lugano never gave up. The Ticino fought for their trophy until the end. In the 85th minute Ousmane Doumbia had another chance to make it 2:2, but the young YB goalie Marvin Keller parried and in return Meschack Elia scored the 3:1. Ready Lugano? No, the admirable Bianconeri came within one goal once more in the 87th minute through Renato Steffen. After that, however, they no longer became more dangerous than they had initially been.

Lugano had heard the second half. In the 53rd minute, Mattia Bottani, who had just come on as a substitute, made it 1:2 and revived a game that YB almost seemed to have decided. League top scorer Jean-Piere Nsame headed in twice for the champions in the 20th minute and in injury time in the first half. The first time the ball flew a bit happily deflected into the goal following a corner kick, before the 2-0 the Cameroonian won the tough duel in the air with goalie Amir Saipi.

Mistakes by Saipi made it 2-0

It was a wild ride in Wankdorf, which was sold out with 31,500 spectators. The two fantastic fan curves had set the tone with their songs and choreographies even before the kick-off and provided the specifications for the match: the two teams went to work with immense intensity.

Hardly a ball acceptance took place without resistance, no decision by referee Fähndrich remained without reaction from the coaches. YB’s Raphael Wicky was exceptionally hot-blooded, his opponent Mattia Croci-Torti reeled off his kilometers as usual on the edge of the coaching zone and spurred on his players without interruption.

The small difference finally made the first half where YB was slightly better and slightly happier. The Bernese struck at the important moment. With the 1:0 they rewarded themselves for the initial dominance and the fight for the centimeters they won at first. The 2:0 then fell out of nowhere in injury time in the first half due to Saipi’s mistake, who, however, then intervened decisively two or three times and thus enabled the men in front of this bravura fight that was hard until the end.
