This Thursday, Felipe VI received the new president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo de León, at the beginning of his first official visit to Spain following his inauguration, on January 14, marked by a controversial transition process due to the Prosecutor’s Office’s attempts to reverse his electoral victory.
The Zarzuela Palace was the scene of the meeting between the Spanish monarch and Arévalo de León, who explained the situation in the Central American country following his first month in office.
The king was in Guatemala to attend his inauguration, although he did not finally witness the ceremony of transfer of power due to the ten-hour delay with which it began due to the obstacles of the parliamentarians of the outgoing legislature to establish the new Congress.
The leader of the Semilla Movement, a moderate leftist party, achieved 2.4 million votes in the elections, the highest number in the history of Guatemala, championing the fight once morest corruption.
Felipe VI welcomed the 65-year-old academic on the outside steps of the Zarzuela and, following a first posed together in front of the print media, they greeted each other once more in the audience hall.
“Thank you very much, Your Majesty,” the Guatemalan president said for the welcome while they shook hands.
The conversation in the king’s office was joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Carlos Ramiro, the Minister of Economy, Gabriela García, and, on the Spanish side, the Secretary of State for Latin America, Susana Sumelzo, and the ambassador to Guatemala, José María Laviña.
After the meeting with the king, Arévalo de León will meet with the head of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez, at the Moncloa Palace, headquarters of the Presidency of the Government.
The next appointment will be at the Royal Palace, where the kings are going to offer a meal to Arévalo de León and his wife, Lucrecia Peinado, with the attendance of Sánchez and regarding eighty guests.
The president arrived in Spain following a tour that began in Munich (Germany) and continued in Paris, Brussels and Geneva (Switzerland).
