Géza Soponyai was a defining figure of Balaton sailing, he started his sports career at the age of 12 in the rowing division of Csepel SC, his first real success was the development of the Balaton 50 cruiser into a large competition class, which is currently the most active competition class on Lake Balaton.
Géza Soponyai saved 5 people in the huge storm at the Kékszalag race organized in 2000 with his team, abandoning the competition, for which he received a fair play award.
“It is with deep pain that we inform you that Géza Soponyai – or, as sailing enthusiasts called him, Sopi – sailed away this morning forever…” the family informed the public.
Géza Soponyai Bernadette Tunyogi he was the husband of an actress-singer. They got married in September 2018, having met at a women’s sailing competition.
On May 11, 2024, admirers of Géza Soponyai will remember Géza Soponyai at the Sailing Festival and Season Opening Sailing Competition in Balatonfüred.
