Berne: “Suddenly something bit my leg”
A swim at Lake Wohlensee ended in hospital for a Bernese. The woman was attacked by a fish on Monday which left her with a very visible memory.
“When I realized what had just happened, I screamed!” A woman was swimming with her family in the Wohlensee on Monday when she had a bad surprise. In Hinterkappelen, just before the Wohlei Bridge, where the water level is low, she sat on her stand-up paddle and let her legs dangle in the water. But this moment of peace was short-lived. “Suddenly something bit my leg,” the woman said.
Looking under the surface of the waves, the Bernese had a shiver of dread. “There was a huge pike. I immediately pulled my leg out.” Without asking for her rest, she fled the scene to disinfect her wound. Surprised by the force with which she had been bitten, she ran to the emergency room in Bern to seek treatment.
Caregivers impressed
There, no one believed her story until she showed them the condition of her ankle: “The hospital staff were impressed,” says the victim. She was then given antibiotics and the wound was immediately stitched up. Result: five stitches.
Although the Wohlensee is teeming with pike, this is the first time that Samuel Härry, president of the lake’s fishing association, has heard of such an incident. “But I can totally imagine such an event happening. Pikes are territorial animals that often prey on rats, ducks and even small dogs. The pike was probably hungry and so attacked this woman.
He persists: the Bernese has done nothing wrong. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
