  • The Rösti record was broken on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Swiss Farmers’ Union.

  • 13.7 square meters of Rösti were prepared in the shape of a Swiss cross.

  • Potatoes from all Swiss cantons were brought to Bern for the campaign.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the Swiss Farmers’ Association fried a giant rösti, setting a world record by its own account. The traditional Swiss dish of grated potatoes was prepared in a 13.7 square meter pan in the shape of a Swiss cross on the Bundesplatz in Bern on Monday.

Previous record exceeded by three square meters

This surpassed the previous record from the city of Thun from 1994 by three square meters, explained farmer president Markus Ritter.

Röstis originally come from the German-speaking part of Switzerland, which is why the language border to the French-speaking part of Switzerland is also known as the «Röstigraben». In order to symbolically overcome the cultural and culinary differences, the potatoes required for the giant rösti were brought to Bern from all cantons of Switzerland, according to the farmers’ association.
