Bermuda on alert as hurricane forecast for Saturday

The National Hurricane Center EU issued a hurricane warning for Saturday in Bermuda due to the path of Ernesto, which has already caused flooding and power outages in northern Puerto Rico.

Ernesto reached Puerto Rico yesterday as a Category 1 hurricane and is now moving northwest at 13 miles per hour (20 kilometers per hour), and is projected to become a major hurricane on Friday, and is expected to become a “major hurricane” by Saturday when the center of the system passes near Bermuda.

Bermuda to be hit by hurricane

Bermuda may experience severe coastal flooding due to a dangerous storm surge, with onshore winds and large, destructive waves close to shore.

Storm surge from Hurricane Ernesto is affecting parts of the Northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday.

This is the third hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1 and has generated five tropical storms: Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby and Ernesto.
