The message reached national ice hockey player Kai Wissmann (25) on vacation. The NHL’s Boston Bruins have signed the Polar Bears defenseman for the upcoming season. Starting salary: 770,508 euros ($825,000). This means that the contract with the Berliners, which is still running for a year, has ended.
Eisbären sports director Stephane Richer (56): “Even during the World Cup in Helsinki there were inquiries from several NHL clubs. Kai has made an excellent development with the polar bears. We are very proud.”
In the 2022 Olympic nomination, the 1.94 m tall right-hand shooter was ignored by national coach Toni Söderholm (44) without justification. At the World Cup debut in Helsinki, Wissmann was the best defender on the German team alongside NHL star Moritz Seider (21 / Detroit). He has the potential to make his way in Boston too, to mature into an NHL regular. Wissmann: “I can hardly wait for it to start. Thank you polar bears for the last ten years.”
The Berliner Eisbären will sign a top defender from abroad for the Schwenninger native. Boston rewarded the Berliners with 177,346 euros (190,198 US dollars) in compensation for Wissmann’s departure.
