German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Wednesday urged Azerbaijan to allow international observers to enter Nagorno Karabakh, a region from which tens of thousands of refugees are fleeing and streaming into Armenia.
“Together with our partners, we will work with all our strength to send observers as quickly as possible,” said the head of German diplomacy in a press release. “It would be a vote of confidence demonstrating that Azerbaijan is serious regarding its commitments to the security and well-being of the people of Nagorno Karabakh if it authorizes the sending of international observers,” he said. -she adds.
Thousands of people are forced to flee their homes to go to Armenia, a week following a lightning offensive by Azerbaijan in this separatist region of the Caucasus.
28,120 refugees
Some 28,120 refugees have arrived in Armenia so far, Armenian authorities said on Tuesday. They often have only the bare necessities and travel in overcrowded cars, with some arriving on foot.
“The children, women and men of Nagorno Karabakh must be able to remain in their homes and in their homeland in peace and dignity,” called Annalena Baerbock.
Germany will increase from 2 to 5 million the amount of humanitarian aid that will be paid to the International Committee of the Red Cross intervening in the region, she announced.
Christian-majority Armenia and Muslim-majority Azerbaijan have fought two deadly wars over the Nagorno-Karabakh region since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The region is now home to up to 120,000 ethnic Armenians, but is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
On Monday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev reaffirmed the promise that the rights of Armenians in the enclave, attached to Azerbaijan in 1921 by the USSR, would be “guaranteed”.
