The tree of joy has been planted. Not at the corner of rue des Sables and rue du Marais in the Brussels city center as the ancestral tradition of August 9 dictates… but at the corner of rue Courte and rue de l’Eglise in Berchem-Sainte- Agatha. This Saturday, before 5 p.m., the “Berchembûûm” was erected, with on its top, not the Belgian flag but the flag of the north-west municipality.
Berchem has been organizing its own Meyboom for four years now in collaboration with the Bûûmdroegers, who came in large numbers this Saturday. “This is not the Meyboom”, nevertheless insists on specifying the mayor of Berchem, Christian Lamouline (Les Engagés), himself Bûûmdroeger. “But it’s a tradition that builds on it.”
The tree, assures the “Bûûm”, was less heavy than that of August 19th. The procession made several stops in different bars in the town before finally returning to the café À l’Espérance. A large crowd attended the planting of the beech, which took place right in the middle of the festivities of the fair and the annual flea market.

Berchem is also the only municipality, with the exception of the City, to organize such a ceremony… And according to the president of the Bûûm, Jean Vanderhaegen, there is no risk of seeing other Meybooms flourish soon in other localities. of the capital.
”The Meyboom is a story that comes from the Bas-Fonds district of Brussels”, recalls the bearer. “Other municipalities make the request, but we refuse.” Berchem is thus an exception. For the record, the planting was organized for the first time at the request of a member… without any real intention of repeating the adventure each year. “And it has become a tradition”, observes the president, who nevertheless says he is open to occasional exports of the Meyboom festivities. “But which must remain exceptional.”
