Our RTLinfo reporters deployed in Ukraine were able to interview Benoît Lutgen, former president of the cdH and current MEP regarding his presence in Lviv.
Benoît Lutgen, mayor of Bastogne, arrived last night in Lviv in Ukraine to bring humanitarian aid. He is accompanied by Georges Dallemand, federal deputy cdH. “I simply come to help and, when I say I come to help, it is the population of Bastogne and the entire region who mobilized to quickly deliver fairly standard equipment, both food products, clothing and especially more specific products, such as medicines and personal protections which are required in particular for those who are volunteers and who will fight, explained Benoît Lutgen. I delivered them during the night to the head of the volunteers, those who work alongside the army, to protect them. These are bulletproof vests in particular”.
Since the beginning of the invasion in Ukraine, many Belgians have mobilized to bring humanitarian, medical and/or financial aid to the Ukrainian people. The Bastognards showed solidarity. “In a short time, we were able to bring a cargo here, explains Benoît Lutgen. I thank all those who mobilized. And we’re going to create contact, that’s what’s also important. I wanted to be sure that all of this was going to get to the right destination, to the right people. I was able to do this thanks to a wonderful woman called Marta who is the president of the biggest Ukrainian association in Europe.”

Lutgen present as a Belgian, but also as a Europeann
“I am here as mayor but also as a European parliamentarian, added Benoît Lutgen. It is important to be present alongside the Ukrainians and the authorities. I had a long discussion with the mayor of Kiev with whom I will stay in contact. It is also important to bear witness to what I can see on the spot. Being able to see reality on the ground is part of our role, I think.”
Benoît Lutgen wishes “to chase” as much as possible the work on site and says to be able to count on the accompaniment of “all Ukrainian services, whether at the level of the army and the political authorities.”
