Benjamín Rausseo proposes a “social emergency decree” for vulnerable populations

Caracas, Jul 7 (EFE).- Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Benjamín Rausseo proposed this Sunday, if he wins the July 28 elections, a “social emergency decree” to immediately attend to the vulnerable population.

“We are preparing a draft decree for a social emergency, the first thing we need to do is to address the people who are dying of hunger,” Rausseo said in a video posted on the social network X.

The independent candidate did not offer further details on what this decree contemplates, but said that one cannot wait “a year, two years, for the economy to reactivate.”

“As long as people have a decent, adequate salary and there are plenty of jobs, those people no longer need the subsidy,” he added.

The Living Conditions Survey (Encovi), presented last March, determined that 51.9% of Venezuelan households suffered, in 2023, from “multidimensional poverty”, characterized by low income, lack of basic services and deterioration of education, among other aspects.

Researcher Luis Pedro España, a member of the team that conducted the survey in 10 regions of the country, explained that in 2023 poverty “stabilized,” rising by only 1.4% compared to 2022, when the indicator improved by 15 percentage points.

With this average, he continued, there is “a lot of room for improvement” in the goal of reaching at least 35% poverty, the “structural” percentage that the country has traditionally managed.

The electoral campaign in Venezuela, in which 10 candidates are competing, began on July 4 and will end on the 25th, three days before the elections, as established by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
