Considerable progress has been made in the fight once morest AIDS in Benin, Beninese Minister of Health Benyamin Hounkpatin said on Friday, December 1.

Speaking at the ceremony launching activities to celebrate World AIDS Day, Mr. Hounkpatin said that this celebration was an ideal moment for the Beninese authorities and their partners to take stock of the results achieved by the country in the fight once morest HIV/AIDS.

“For decades, our country has been mobilizing national resources and technical and financial partners to control the spread of HIV/AIDS,” he said, welcoming the results obtained.

According to him, to date, the prevalence of HIV infection in Benin is estimated at 0.8% in 2022 in the general population.

Joint UN Program on HIV/AIDS

Regarding the implementation of the “95-95-95” objectives of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (which mean that 95% of people living with HIV know their HIV status, that 95% of these people are receiving life-saving antiretroviral treatment and 95% of people on treatment have an undetectable viral load), the situation in Benin is characterized by an improvement in indicators, particularly in terms of initiation of antiretroviral treatment and suppression of viral load among people receiving antiretroviral treatment.

“Although our results are encouraging, efforts remain to be made,” underlined the minister, adding that the Beninese government was investing in education, in access to health services and in reducing disparities to guarantee each community with the prevention tools necessary to protect its members once morest HIV.

Launched in 1988, World AIDS Day is celebrated every year on December 1 around the world.
