Benefits of Coffee and Tea in Preventing Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease: Study Findings

A study conducted at the Rhodes Medical School in Poland found that coffee and tea help prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

This study was published on the 5th according to the Korean Food Communication Forum (KOFRUM), and this meta-analysis conducted at the Department of Preventive Cardiology and Fatty Studies at Rhodes University Medical School in Poland concluded that coffee and tea consumption plays a role in lowering the risk of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This study was recently published in the international journal ‘Pharmaceutical Research’, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of premature death worldwide. The study highlighted that factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation, and increased C-reactive protein (CRP) can promote the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The research team conducted a meta-analysis of 9 research papers and confirmed the effect of coffee consumption on lowering blood CRP concentration. An increase in CRP is considered evidence of acute infection or inflammation. Additionally, a meta-analysis of 12 research papers showed that coffee consumption helps prevent arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease by increasing adiponectin concentration. Adiponectin is known as a ‘good hormone’ that helps prevent obesity, diabetes, and arteriosclerosis.

The research team said in the paper, “Consumption of coffee and tea was found to increase adiponectin concentration, reduce free radicals, and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, which are harmful to vascular health. Consumption of coffee and tea as part of a healthy diet “The conclusion of our study is that it is recommended,” he emphasized.

Additionally, there are over 1,000 bioactive substances in coffee, among which caffeine, chlorogenic acid, trigonelline, melanoid, caffeic acid, kawal, and cafestol are the most popular. In particular, caffeine has an antioxidant effect and reduces the activity of components related to inflammation. The research team emphasized, “Cawol and cafestol, which are found in unfiltered coffee, also have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,” and “caffeic acid is also an ingredient that improves inflammation.”
