It was an unusual but very specific call from a German journalist colleague in the OÖN sports department: information was being collected about Kurt Russ – the coach of the regional soccer team Askö Oedt. The 59-year-old is very popular with a German Bundesliga club.
No, we’re not talking about Eintracht Frankfurt or Borussia Mönchengladbach – but we are talking about a traditional club: 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, a club that only has a women’s football team but not a men’s team. There were six championship titles between 2004 and 2012, as well as two victories in the Women’s Champions League (2005, 2010). Recently they had a sporting stumbling block, they were relegated from the Bundesliga two years ago and promoted again last season.
They are currently in last place at the bottom of the German Bundesliga table, which is why the coaching duo Dirk Heinrichs/Marco Gebhardt were fired at the weekend. A successor has not been named – Kurt Russ is said to be at the top of the list.
