Bénac: Christmas mass of the shepherds sung in Gascon

The small church of Bénac welcomes this Saturday at 6 p.m. the Christmas mass sung by the shepherds.

Crowds expected, this Saturday from 6 p.m., in the church of Béanc where the sung mass of the shepherds must be celebrated.

Organized and run by the Canta se gausas! association, the traditional Christmas mass takes on a special dimension with traditional songs.

In all, there are 12 traditional singers and musicians dressed as shepherds, but also 11 children who will play the roles of Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the angels. A lamb will also be carried to the altar to be blessed.

twenty songs

“We are going to perform regarding twenty traditional sacred songs from Bigorre. These are polyphonies in Gascon” explains BAstien Miqueu from the Canta se gausas association! This mass is an opportunity for the singers of the association who sing throughout the year to bring the traditional Bigourdan repertoire to life. A great opportunity to bring culture and its part of vocal heritage to life.

A living tradition brought up to date by the interpretation of contemporary singers. The singing tour will be completed with songs in Latin and French.

In 2019, during the first edition of this mass, nearly 800 people rushed to the church. This second edition will take place in a particular context with a tribute paid to François Coste and Laurent Lacoste, two firefighters from Arrens who died last July in a road accident.

Saturday, December 24, 6 p.m., mass in the church of Bénac. Vigil from 5:15 p.m.
