Ben Weyts threatens a Ronse school following the FWB school calendar: “The school regulations are not a menu of choice”

According to Ben Weyts, the school is bound by the regulations in force in Flanders and sanctions can be imposed on it if it does not respect the timetable for application in the north of the country.

The Wallonia-Brussels Federation inaugurated its new school calendar on Monday, which provides for shorter summer holidays but two weeks off on All Saints Day and Carnival. A modification that Flanders did not follow, whose schools will reopen on September 1.

In the commune with facilities of Ronse, a French-speaking school has however decided to align itself with the FWB calendar, which has caused the dissatisfaction of the Minister N-VA, especially since no request to this effect has been made by the establishment to the Flemish authorities.

For the rest of the school year, the school will have to respect the Flemish calendar. Otherwise, sanctions – going as far as a suspension of the means of operation – might be imposed on him, warned Ben Weyts. “A misunderstanding is always possible when a Community adjusts its calendar. But the school regulations are not a menu of choice. In Flanders, the Flemish calendar remains in force and applies to all French-speaking schools in municipalities with facilities in Flemish region,” he said.
