CDMX. – María Eugenia Ríos Romero, remembered for her roles in the telenovelas María Mercedes (1992) and Rubí (2004), passed away last Thursday at the age of 88, as informed by her son Andrés Bonfiglio.
“I deeply appreciate all your prayers; however, my mother decided to leave us 10 minutes ago to reunite with my beloved father. May they live happily for eternity,” wrote her firstborn on social media, where he posted a series of photographs of the actress.
Ríos Romero was born on August 4, 1935, and studied to be a bilingual secretary, later training as an actress at the Andrés Soler Academy, part of the National Association of Actors (ANDA), where she had teachers like Celestino Gorostiza, Salvador Novo, and Seki Sano.
“The National Association of Actors deeply regrets the passing of our colleague María Eugenia Ríos, who dedicated years of her life to our Union and the Children’s Home. Our condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. Rest in peace,” lamented ANDA.
In 1954, she debuted as an actress at the Palacio de Bellas Artes after Sano invited her to join the cast of a play by American playwright Arthur Miller.
Her debut on television began with Televisa telenovelas such as La Herencia (1962) and Penumbra (1962), and she later gained recognition in Pablo y Elena (1963), El Medio Pelo (1966), La Sombra del Pecado (1966), Anita de Montemar (1967), Rubí (1968), and Chucho el Roto (1968).
