It was a black day for motocross fans: On Saturday followingnoon, at the first race of the season in Belmont-sur-Yverdon VD, two accidents happened within minutes – one of them ended fatally, as did the Vaud police in one Media release on Sunday announces.
In the MX3 category, reserved for veterans, at 5:15 p.m. and 5:40 p.m. two participants in the Angora championship had an accident. One of the victims, a 61-year-old man from Bern, died in the hospital. The other participant, a 47-year-old Portuguese resident of the canton of Neuchâtel, was seriously injured. The rescue workers were alerted immediately. Two Rega helicopters were deployed.
The competent public prosecutor’s office initiated a criminal investigation and transferred the investigation to the cantonal police. On his Facebook site the organizer has not yet commented on the accidents.
Police are appealing for witnesses to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. Anyone who attended the event and is able to provide information is asked to contact the cantonal police of Vaud on 021 333 53 33 or the nearest police station.
