There will be an electric atmosphere at Fenway Park on Wednesday night when Brayan Bello, one of the best pitching prospects the Red Sox have had in years, makes his major league debut once morest the Rays.
A source told MLB.com that Bello will be promoted to start in place of Rich Hill, who was placed on the disabled list July 2 with a sprained left knee.
MassLive’s Kate Morrison was the first to break the news of Bello’s promotion, following being told directly by the right-hander following Triple-A Worcester’s 6-4 win Monday night.
The 23-year-old from Quito has a deep repertoire, including a 99 mph fastball that mixes well with a changeup and slider.
After going 4-2 with a 1.60 ERA in six starts with Double-A Portland to start the season, Bello was promoted to Triple-A, where he started for the first time on May 18.
In nine starts for the WooSox, Bello posted a 6-2 record with a 2.81 ERA in 51 1/3 innings. He walked 21 and struck out 72 batters, holding opponents to a .209 batting average.
