A last-minute goal from Jude Bellingham saved Real Madrid and ÖFB star David Alaba from a false start in the Champions League. The “Royals” had to wait until the 94th minute for the goal to make it 1-0 (0-0) at the start of Group C once morest German Bundesliga club Union Berlin on Wednesday. The Berliners, with Christopher Trimmel sitting on the bench, were very unfortunate to miss out on a sensation on their “premier league” debut.

Ex-Dortmund Bellingham pushed a double-deflected Valverde shot from a corner over the line from close range. Coach Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrilenians are still flawless this season with their sixth win in their sixth competitive game. Alaba played as a left-back and later a central defender and showed a solid performance. Real Madrid ended up with 30 shots on goal, but lacked the necessary precision for a long time.

Veteran Leonardo Bonucci played his first game in the Union jersey. The 36-year-old Italian, European champion in 2021, was last rejected by Juventus. Bonucci played a total of 84 CL games for the “Old Lady” and the central defender’s experience was also noticeable at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. The Madrilenians didn’t really have a great chance in the first half, headers from Joselu (3rd, 6th, 24th) went over, as did an Alaba free kick (23rd).

In the second half, Rodrygo (51′) and Joselu (63′) each hit the bar. At times Real pressed vehemently for the lead, but they lacked penetration once morest tightly defending Berliners. Union goalie Frederik Rönnow excelled at a Modric long shot (69′), and following an Alaba corner Antonio Rüdiger headed over (75′). Another shot from Joselu narrowly missed the goal in the 83rd minute before Bellingham let the fans in white celebrate shortly before the end.
