England midfielder Jude Bellingham has said he will always “love and respect” manager Gareth Southgate, regardless of whether he stays or leaves the post, following the team’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.
Southgate has refused to comment on his future, following ending his media duties following the 2-1 defeat in Berlin, the PA news agency reported.
“I think this is not the time to make a decision like this,” Southgate told ITV Sport following the final whistle.
Southgate, 52, has twice led England to the final of the European Championship, losing to Spain and Italy on penalties at Wembley three years ago. While Southgate’s future remains uncertain, Bellingham has praised the England manager for making the right decision.
“For me, it’s up to the manager and what the FA decides,” he said. “I have nothing but respect for Southgate because he gave me my debut and made me feel at home.”
“I’ve felt over the last two years that he’s someone that I’ve had a relationship with that goes beyond football a little bit, that I feel I can open my heart to a lot, and I think that shows how valuable he is as a human being,” he added.
“Whatever happens with Gareth, I will still respect him,” he said. “If he continues, I will be even more determined to win games for him because he deserves it.”
“Sometimes the numbers and the quality of the statistics and the records do not lie. He has been the most successful England manager since 1966, so whatever decision he makes, he will always have my respect and love,” he added.
