The American model, born to a Palestinian father and Dutch mother, visited Qatar to attend an exhibition on the history of Palestinian embroidery.
“I landed in Doha and went straight to see the amazing new Palestine exhibition,” Hadid said on Instagram, attaching her caption to a set of photos from the exhibition, including one she collects with her father, Mohamed Hadid.
She continued, “I shed tears because of this show, and it made me even more proud of my roots and my Palestinian people.” She concluded by saying: “I love you, Qatar, and I love you, Palestine!”
Hadid also attended the opening of the “Qatar Creates” events, and accompanied by famous model Naomi Campbell, she took a night tour of the Museum of Islamic Art. Qatar Innovates is a platform for artistic and cultural performances across the country, and was established primarily to introduce tourists to the local culture, especially during the World Cup that will be hosted by the Gulf state next month.
Hadid has often used her online platforms to highlight the ongoing oppression of Palestinians by the Israeli occupation, and has also participated in the Free Palestine demonstrations. Also, it has reportedly donated its profits to organizations that support Palestinian refugees.
Her father’s family fled the city of Nazareth during the Nakba of 1948, when tens of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly evicted from their homes during the establishment of the State of Israel.
