Bella suffered three rare diseasesBella has suffered from dwarfism, Hirschsprung’s disease and severe combined immunodeficiency since birth; conditions that affected her health throughout her life. At the end of 2023, the girl received an intestinal transplant and spent four months in hospital. According to Canadian radio CFM, last week, the little girl received palliative care and was put into an induced coma at the Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto due to a severe lung infection. “Bella’s lungs have been deteriorating rapidly, similar to fibrosis. They think it might be an immune response,” her mother wrote on social media.

Shortly followingward, she said that doctors had told her they had seen this type of reaction following a bone marrow transplant, but they did not know what was happening to her daughter. “The only option left to help her lungs function once more is high-dose steroids. We are on day two of that and day three will give us more information regarding how soon we might see her lung function improve,” she said.

Kyla also recounted when her daughter had been put into an induced coma: “She is stable and that in itself is an improvement for now,” she said. “Lyle – the little girl’s father – and I talk to her, I play music for her and we read her all the cards, letters and messages that you all have sent her. We are praying and believing that we have stopped the attack of fibrosis in her lungs so that they will allow them to heal and function once more. This wait is more than unbearable,” she said. Finally, Bella might not survive and her family made this known.

Thousands of followers, both on Instagram and Tik Tok, followed Bella’s story closely. Following the announcement of her death, the accounts were filled with comments with messages of support for the family.

Three congenital disorders

The Hirschsprung’s disease is a disorder that affects the large intestine and causes problems with bowel movements. It is congenital, meaning it is present at birth. Intestinal muscle contractions cause digested food and liquids to move through the intestine, a process known as peristalsisIn people with this condition, the nerves responsible for causing these contractions are absent in certain areas. As a result, these areas cannot push solid and liquid waste through, which causes intestinal blockage.

Symptoms in newborns and infants include difficulty with bowel movements, passing meconium following birth, or having the first bowel movement within the first 24 to 48 hours following delivery. It may also cause explosive and infrequent stools, jaundice, poor feeding, poor weight gain, vomiting, or watery diarrhea. If health conditions become complicated, it may cause inflammation and infection of the intestine, perforation or rupture, and short bowel syndrome.

For its part, the severe combined immunodeficiency It is a group of hereditary diseases of the immune system that are characterized by a malfunction of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes, white blood cells that are specific for protecting the body once morest infections. The most common symptom is an increased risk of suffering from infections, whether in the ear, lungs or bronchi. Precisely because of the concurrent infectious processes, children who suffer from it have difficulty growing and gaining enough weight.
