Eight days after her clear defeat in the round of 16 of the US Open in front of Sorana Cirstea, Belinda Bencic (WTA 15) disappointed again. Saint-Galloise lost ingloriously in San Diego.
She was beaten 6-3 3-6 6-2 in the first round by Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (WTA 102), who came out of qualifying for this WTA 500 tournament.
Bencic had however made a good start to lead 3-1. However, she had to let 5 games slip away in a row to lose control. In the 3rd set, she erased a first break to return to 2-2 before letting go, betrayed by her physique.
Eleventh in the “Race” before this tournament, Bencic was not really reassured. His fragility both mentally and physically does not bode well in the race for the Cancun Masters, his declared objective. It is difficult to see how she could gain the 3 places she lacks to ensure her qualification.
