New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s tenure appears to be expiring. Comments on how long Belichick has been in the hot seat came from Patriots writer Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. “He’s in the ejection seat, and he’s been in there since 2019,” Curran told The Rich Eisen Show on Monday.
Jerod Mayo: successor to Belichick
After former linebacker and aspiring assistant Jerod Mayo extended his offseason contract, it seems clear in New England that he’s the likely coach-in-waiting when Belichick’s tenure with the Patriots comes to an end. Curran hinted that another underperforming season might see owner Robert Kraft potentially pushing Belichick into a front-office role, which has long been thought to be the next step for Belichick if he steps aside. Curran also noted that Mayo would be the likely successor as manager.
New England has gone 25-25, one playoff appearance and zero wins in the last three seasons since star quarterback Tom Brady left the franchise to free agency following the 2019 season. The Patriots, who were the favorites to win the AFC East for two decades, have since regressed in the division and have struggled to maintain the standard set by Belichick and future Hall of Famer quarterback Brady.
Patriots without Brady: Shadows of themselves
Long gone from the dynasty they once were, the Patriots are a mere shadow of themselves, having won six Super Bowl titles from 2001 to 2019. Now that Brady is long gone and Belichick is struggling in his absence, the manager’s status might come to a head sooner rather than later if New England struggles back on the field this season.
