Belgium’s Tax Reform: Lowering Taxes and Boosting Wages for Workers

Vincent Van Peteghem (CD&V), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, was a guest on RTL Info Signatures. He brought up the issue of taxes. Belgium remains one of the most taxed countries in the world. For example, families with children and two incomes are the most taxed in the West.

The government is discussing tax reform this weekend. Will Belgian taxes go down? “We are the world champions of labor taxes“, he acknowledges. “It is necessary to do something. I put a proposal on the table which will give 835€ per year for all the people who work. We give an extra boost to the lowest wages with the employment bonus.

Its objective is to differentiate between work and inactivity. “These differences must be greater“, he asserts.

At the same time, the VAT goes from 6% to 9% except on basic products. “Experts say it’s necessary to have a shift from employment rates to wealth rates“, he explains. “We also look for money on fortunes but also in consumption.
