The Belgian authorities presented Monday in Bruges a first plan for the dismantling of first-generation offshore wind turbines, located in the Belgian part of the North Sea. This draft was produced by various actors on behalf of the Marine Environment Department of the FPS Environment, and the Minister for the North Sea, Vincent Van Quickenborne.

Since October, stakeholders, under the aegis of the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences, have met monthly to develop a vision on decommissioning. The result of their reflections was presented on Monday. “Operating permits for operational Belgian wind farms date back 10 or 15 years. The dismantling of first-generation wind turbines is therefore in sight“, comments Minister Van Quickenborne. Several technologies can be deployed for such dismantling.

In particular, the possibilities for recycling and reassigning the blades are examined. Techniques are also studied with a view to eliminating all the foundations. For their part, the operators of these wind farms, who will have to carry out and finance the dismantling, are worried regarding the cost of the operation if all the foundations have to be removed. Further analysis and consultation are necessary to study the feasibility.
