Belgium’s Longest Cycling Bridge: Connecting Brussels Region and Flanders with a Majestic 710-Meter Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge

A large-scale project is taking place on the border between the Brussels Region and Flanders. A stone’s throw from NATO headquarters, a majestic bicycle bridge is being installed. 710 meters long, it will connect the Harenweg de Zaventem to the Sint-Stevens-Woluwestraat in Machelen, passing above Avenue Léopold III (A201). According to Minister Lydia Peeters (Open VLD), it is therefore the longest cycling bridge in Belgium.

A 710-meter pedestrian and cycle bridge will span Boulevard Léopold III

Currently, cyclists must make a one-kilometer detour and cross the busy avenue. The new infrastructure should therefore save them several minutes.

Major disturbances at night

After several long preparation stages, the actual bridge arrives. The installation has started and includes 15 sections. The work is mainly carried out at night, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Depending on the progress of the construction site and the sections, various traffic difficulties are expected, with streets and connections closed.

With the new Defense HQ, Haren and Boulevard Léopold III continue their transformation: “It’s a symbol”

The most impactful night already scheduled will undoubtedly be that of October 24 to 25: Avenue Léopold III will be closed in both directions between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the trams will be interrupted.

The end of the work is scheduled for spring 2024. In total, a budget of 11.7 million was necessary to finance the project. A sum invested by the Flemish Region via the Werkvennootschap.
