Belgium’s Historic Raptors: Witness the First Breeding of Sea Eagles in Centuries

It is therefore possible that these raptors will soon breed in Belgium, which would be a first in hundreds of years.

The two large sea eagles settled in the nature reserve near Diksmuide last spring. The two raptors were expected to leave following a few days but they began to build a nest in a willow tree, from which they chased a pair of buzzards.

It remains to be seen whether the couple will give birth to little bearded eagles next spring. “This would then be a first for centuries in Belgium,” underlines Natuurpunt. These white-tailed eagles probably come from neighboring Netherlands, where the species has been breeding since 2006. Thirty-six pairs have already been recorded there this year.

The nature protection organization calls on passers-by to disturb the duo of birds of prey, now named Betty and Paul, as little as possible.

The bald eagle is one of the largest European birds of prey, with a wingspan of up to two and a half meters. It feeds mainly on geese and coots, as well as occasionally muskrats or herons.
