Belgium’s Diverse Traffic Laws: Navigating Regional Highway Codes and Regulations

1. The maximum speed on the national road, outside urban areas, is set at 90 km/h in Wallonia and only 70 km/h in Flanders. This has already caused a lot of problems for motorists who were traveling from one region to another and who were not aware of the difference in limits.

New Public Road Code in Belgium: one and the same country but three different highway codes

2. In Brussels, driving in urban areas is also limited to 30 km/h except where signs indicate another speed. In Flanders and Wallonia, it is 50 km/h except in places indicated by another speed sign.

3. In the Brussels region, candidates for the practical exam are required to take first aid training. Which is not the case elsewhere. Furthermore, license candidates in Wallonia and Brussels can also take their exam directly if they have followed 30 hours of practical training at a driving school. In Flanders, the 20-hour driving school training must be accompanied by nine months of solo driving.

50 years old, the Highway Code will evolve for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists: here is everything that will change

4. Flanders requires 4 hours of post-license training, called Terugkommoment, for young drivers, six months following obtaining their practical license. This is not the case in Wallonia or Brussels.

5. In Wallonia, vehicles that practice carpooling – with at least three passengers – can travel on certain sections of the emergency lane. Not in Flanders. This gives rise to aberrations such as on the E411 where carpoolers can travel on the emergency lane from Wavre to Rosières but no longer between Overijse and Brussels.

6. Brussels and Flanders have each established low emission zones. There are currently none in Wallonia.

7.In Flanders, mobile section radars can be installed on construction sites, in order to secure the work zones over their entire length. This type of radar is still only being studied in the south of the country.

Once upon a time there was a small country… with three different traffic laws: in Belgium, the absurdities continue, once more and once more
