Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir declared that she will appeal to the Court of Cassation once morest the judgment of the Brussels Court of Appeal which criticizes Belgium, Flanders and Brussels for a lax climate policy.
Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA) had already indicated on Thursday that she was considering appealing to the Court of Cassation and confirmed, this Friday on Radio 1, that she would do so. “It’s a question of principle,” she said. “We live in a democracy, but the Court of Appeal goes beyond European reduction obligations.”
Zuhal Demir sees in this judgment the decision of a French-speaking judge to impose “collective impoverishment” on Flanders.
“Political decisions”
Zuhal Demir sees in this judgment the decision of a French-speaking judge to impose a “collective impoverishment” to Flanders. “I will not allow a judge to take political decisions. Because this actually amounts to imposing a narrative of degrowth.”
What surprises Zuhal Demir is that the Walloon region has not been condemned. “Why? Because Wallonia closed two blast furnaces in Liège and Charleroi. As a result, CO₂ emissions have decreased significantly, with all the consequences on employment. I am very clear on this subject: we do not Let’s not go down this path.”
The Court of Cassation examines whether the lower courts correctly applied the law, but does not rule on the facts.
> To see where Belgium is in its race once morest carbon, it’s this way.
