The seven people arrested in Flanders on Thursday and suspected of having planned a terrorist attack have been placed under an arrest warrant, according to information from the VRT confirmed by the federal prosecutor’s office. They will appear before the council chamber within five days to determine whether or not to extend their preventive detention.
The suspects had not yet set a specific target for their attack and were still discussing different scenarios, but were actively looking for weapons. Most of the suspects arrested are Chechens. Three of them have Belgian nationality. They belong to a group of staunch supporters of the Islamic State.
The group was arrested during three searches in Roeselare, three in Menin and other searches in Ostend, Wevelgem and Ghent.
