Belgium New Car Registration Report 2023: Electric Cars Dominate Market, BMW Tops Best-Selling Brands

Some 25,715 new cars were registered in Belgium in December, according to figures communicated by the FPS Mobility and the Belgian and Luxembourg Automobile and Cycle Federation (Febiac). This result brings the total of new cars registered in our country to 476,675 units for the entire 2023 financial year, or 30% more than in 2022.

This is the best result for the Belgian automotive market since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020“, rejoices Febiac. Cars registered by companies made up more than two thirds of registrations, showing an increase of 41% in market share. As for registrations carried out by private customers, the growth was however more contained with 33% of the market in 2023.

Furthermore, almost half of the cars newly registered in 2023 were equipped with an electric motor, with plug-in hybrids making up the largest share (21%), ahead of 100% electric cars (19.3%) and hybrids. self-recharging (7.6%). Gasoline cars represented 42.4% of the market last year, compared to 8.9% for diesel vehicles.

In terms of brands, BMW topped the ranking of best-selling cars in Belgium last year, ahead of Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes. Among the most popular models, the BMW X1 came first, ahead of the Tesla Model Y and the Dacia Sandero. The motorized two-wheeler market, which includes motorcycles, scooters, tricycles and light quadricycles, closes the 2023 financial year with an increase of 2.7% in its registrations, or 25,359 new vehicle registrations.
