Since the start of the revaccination campaign once morest Covid-19, 1,869,873 doses of vaccine have been administered, according to figures published Wednesday by the Belgian Institute for Public Health, Sciensano. However, strong differences are observed between Flanders, the Brussels Region and Wallonia, professor of vaccinology Pierre Van Damme (UAntwerpen) pointed out to VRT NWS on Thursday.
According to the latest weekly bulletin on infectious diseases published by Sciensano, more than 1.8 million Belgians have received a new dose of vaccine once morest Covid-19 as of December 11, 2023. This means that 13.4% of the Belgian population has received a reminder this fall. More than 42% of people aged between 65 and 84 and more than 45% of those over 85 have been vaccinated in the last six months, while this rate drops to 8% for those aged 18-64. Sciensano further specifies that more than four out of ten immunocompromised people have received a new dose of vaccine.
There are also significant differences between regions. More than half of Flemish people over 65 went to the doctor or pharmacist for a new dose of vaccine, compared to just over a quarter in Wallonia and less than one in four in Brussels. In the German-speaking community, this rate even falls around 10%.
According to Pierre Van Damme of UAntwerpen, these figures are below the vaccination rates shown in recent years. “There may be some general vaccine fatigue,” he explains. He also points out the fact that Covid-19 generally causes fewer complications than at the start of the crisis.
